My Digital Team Director, Han (@hanseldee), and I were interviewing and photographing supporters of the Obama campaign for the 2012 election at Norfolk State University. After the first round of interviews Han asked me if I had a nice shirt with me. Surprised, I asked him why. He said, “You will be meeting the president today before he addresses the supporters, students, and faculty.”

I quickly grabbed my spare shirt out of the car and entered the security detail area, where we were received by secret service. After a while we entered a room in one of the academic buildings and, because it was hot and I was working, I decided not to wear my button-down shirt until I cooled off a bit.

President Obama“How I met with President Obama .”

When we reached our final destination, where we were to meet with President Obama, I decided it was time to put my shirt on. I loosened my pants, dropped them down slightly, so as to be able to TUCK my shirt in. Something I’ve done countless times over the years. Nothing to it, right? As I’m in the middle of this my mind wanders to all the things I want to discuss with the president; that inherited an unstable economy, unemployment, gun control, making America and the world safe again, Vietnam era veterans and the environment, specially the environment. Realizing, of course, that President Obama is very much aware of all of these issues and more.

To my surprise, I looked up and there was President Obama looking in my direction and laughing. Of course, within nanoseconds, we both cracked up laughing and all I can say to him is, “I support you and will always watch your back”. Not the impression I wanted to make but at least we both have a great story to tell.
